japan vegan guide

The ultimate survival guide for vegans in Japan (coming soon in early 2019)

Clothing

Tips on how to find cruelty-free clothes, jackets, and footwear for both men and women.

clothes

what to avoid & what to look for

Unfortunately there is not a single clothing store or brand in Japan that is 100% vegan, so when you go for shopping look out for the below Japanese words on tags to check if it is vegan or not.

What to avoid:

  • ウール (wool)
  • シルク or 絹 (silk)
  • 皮 or 牛革 (cow leather)
  • 毛皮 or ファー (fur)
  • ダウン (feather/down)
  • スエード(suede)

What to look for:

  • コットン or 綿 (cotton)
  • 麻 (hemp)
  • ポリエステル (polyester)
  • レーヨン (rayon)
  • ナイロン (nylon)
  • ポリウレタン (polyurethane)
  • スパンデックス (spandex)
  • 合成皮革 (synthetic leather)
  • プリマロフト (primaloft)

*When you are not sure if the material is vegan, ask the sales person, “Kore wa dōbutsu-sei desu ka? (Is this an animal-based material?)”

winter jackets

Where to go and other alternative

Jackets, especially winter jackets can be a challenge as many are made of wool or down. Good places to look are outdoor clothing stores where you will find synthetic coats and jackets to keep you warm during Japan’s cold winter.

Alternatively, if you are traveling in U.S. or Canada, it’d be a good idea to shop for winter jackets at below all-vegan stores.

  • Save the Duck
  • Wuxly Movement
  • NOIZE
  • HoodLamb
